After the success of the Indiana Online Image
Competition last April, we are now at the
midpoint of Spring. It’s time to turn our
attention to the Indiana State Fair and the Fair’s
annual Photography Competition and
Exhibition, which IPPG will once again help to
administer. We encourage all Indiana
photographers to participate. Each year has been
a resounding success and we are looking forward
to another group of very talented
photographers, both amateur and professional,
student and adult, to participate in displaying their
photography skills and images.
This year will be very exciting with several improvements to guide both the professional and
amateur photographer. There are many photographic categories to enter in each division
including this year’s theme of “BASKETBALL.”
PROFESSIONAL DIVISION

NEW: In the Professional Division, we have
added the new category “PHOTOGRAPHIC
ARTIST.” Here a conceptual image is altered or
manipulated from its original condition. Creations
can be a subtle application using post-processing
techniques or a dramatic combination of details
to suggest a larger story. The purpose of this
competition is to allow the entrant to demonstrate their art skills and expertise in photography.

A “Photographic Artist" image can be created
using digital or traditional art (such as painting
and airbrush) or a combination of both. It may
also be a composite photograph made up of more
than one to many different photographs. In either
case, the finished print must include small thumbnails (to the bottom or side) of the original image along with any other added images. Judging includes the skill in which the photographer manipulates the printed image. A full explanation and description may be found In the Indiana Arts Open Book and our website, with a sample image. Please see the link and sample image below:

AMATEUR DIVISION
NEW: For Amateurs, we have increased the number of entries allowed from 2 to 3 prints plus 1
State Fair Theme print for a maximum total of 4
print entries. It is our hope to give amateurs greater exposure and chances to enter.
NEW: Helpful Instructions in Preparing Your
Images for Competition (digital mattes and
mounting for exhibition) may be found In the Indiana Arts Open Book. It is also on our
website (including a video https://ippgonline.org/

HELPFUL FOR ALL INDIVIDUALS ENTERING
Once again, IPPG is offering each entrant the opportunity to select the Live Stream of Judging on Sunday July 23, 2023 for $10.

Each entrant will also have the opportunity to
have their print(s) critiqued by a local Master of
Photography degree member of the Professional
Photographers of America. Prints will be critiqued
for an additional $15 each.

In the Professional Division, the PET PORTRAIT category will be offered for the second
year. We hope that many will decide to enter this
category and share their work on the beauty of
domestic pets. This is not the animal category. It
is intended for family pets that we all love to see.

An AWARD CEREMONY for all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
ribbon winners in each category plus the Best of
Shows will be held on Friday August 4, 2023 from
6:00-7:30 on the 3rd floor of the Indiana Arts
Building.
In addition to entering, each entrant will receive 6
complementary “Exhibitor Tickets” to the fair. To
enter go to Exhibitors Corner: https://exhibitorscorner.indianastatefair.com/

Division rules and guidelines please see the Indiana Arts Open Entry Book (Photography Division pp. 57-61):

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
For the past several years, we have had more than 750 prints entered in the Photography Competition and Exhibition. Needless to say, it is a very, very large undertaking. All this can only be accomplished with the help of members of the photography community to step up and volunteer some time. You need not be an IPPG member. Everyone with an interest in photography is invited to be a part of this Indiana State Fair
tradition. We have a number of dates, times and
assignments which are in need of people to help out. If you are interested, please go to the below link and sign up for a time slot. Any time you volunteer, you will receive a free parking pass for the next time you come to the State Fair. IPPG members may also earn a credit towards the IPPG Fellowship. It is the Indianapolis Professional Photographers Guild goal this year to help clarify some of the guidelines and rules to enable a better understanding of how the Photography Competition and Exhibition is organized and run. We want to take the stress out of entering and bring joy in seeing each photographer’s work exhibited.
